$275 + GST
– Oils & Acrylics
– Prerequisite: basic figure drawing & basic painting

Course Description

In this intensive course, students learn how to paint the human figure in alla prima (wet-into-wet) using both traditional techniques of the Old Masters as well as contemporary techniques in paint application. The live model will be used throughout the entire weekend, allowing for greater focus on the subtle nuances of form, light and flesh tones. On Saturday morning, students warm up with a range of gestural fast paintings (30 & 60-minute) exploring monochromatic and simple skin tone palettes, followed by a 3-hour sustained pose in the afternoon utilizing realistic skin tones. On Sunday, students embark on an all-day ‘long painting’ with the model holding one sustained pose. Emphasis will be placed upon paint application (thin-to-thick, dark-to-light, dull-to-bright) as well as creating skin tones utilizing colour theory (colour mixing, temperature shifts, hue saturation). And for those that are ‘up for it’, we’ll explore a range of contemporary painting techniques (expressive brushwork, artificial colour, squeegee application, removal & scraping techniques, silhouettes, flats, negative space, dramatic compositions, etc.), bringing new life into your paintings! This course is supplemented with individual and group feedback, live demonstrations as well as discussions on both historical and contemporary figurative painting. At the course’s end, you’ll have experienced a heightened sense of creativity, momentum and productivity setting the stage for new inspiration and real breakthroughs in your own painting practice.
